Raffaele Chiulli, as GAISF Leader, was in attendance at the opening ceremony of the FISU Winter Universiade Krasnoyarsk 2019 on Saturday.
The Universiade was officially opened by the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, and the ceremony itself celebrated the rich cultural history of Siberia. As part of the warm welcome, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach delivered a video message to the 3,000 athletes.
As well as the opening ceremony, Dr. Chiulli enjoyed the cross-country skiing and ice hockey competitions, the latter of which featured the home nation of Russia.
During his time in Krasnoyarsk, Dr. Chiulli held a number of meetings on behalf of GAISF, including time spent with Russian Sports Minister and former fencing Olympic champion, Pavel Kolobkov.
“After an incredible opening ceremony, the Winter Universiade has continued to deliver wonderful athletic performances and great competitions,” Dr Chiulli said.
“FISU’s organisation of the whole event has been exemplary and I wish to offer my congratulations, not only to all the athletes competing, but to President Matytsin, the organising committee and all the dedicated volunteers.”
Krasnoyarsk 2019 is the 29th Winter Universiade and the first winter edition to take place in Russia. Over 10 days, the best student athletes from around the world will take part in 11 sports, including non-Olympic events such as bandy and ski orienteering. The Universiade also puts particular emphasis on encouraging international dialogue between athletes, volunteers and spectators.
FISU is the International University Sports Federation and a founding Member of GAISF, as well as a key part of the Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF).
The Winter Universiade Krasynoyarsk 2019 continues until 12 March. For more information, visit: https://krsk2019.com/en/home.
