GAISF Head of Digital Pierre Germeau led a panel session dedicated to the role of .sport at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2019 in Geneva on Monday.
A .sport URL is a digital symbol of legitimacy and verification for sports organisations. The initiative, launched by GAISF in September 2018, ensures that accepted domain names stand out as recognised, respectable and leading members of the sports ecosystem.
The session offered delegates an opportunity to learn more about .sport, as well as the innovative ways in which International Federations (IFs) and sports stakeholders could most effectively utilise a .sport domain name.
Germeau was joined by ICANN Senior Director for Government and IGO Engagement Laurent Ferrali, World Archery Secretary General Tom Dielen and Executive Committee Member at CORE Internet Council of Registrars, Werner Staub.
GAISF’s mission is to serve, represent, promote and protect the common interests of IFs, and the .sport initiative not only offers Members a chance to develop their digital presence but also ensures a level of protection. Only legitimate stakeholders within the sports ecosystem are granted permission to use a .sport URL.
“The role of .sport as a trusted space is integral to the WSIS Action Lines for Development, and can also have a major impact on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Germeau said. “It allows us to clearly mark out the trusted partners in sport, which is an advantage for both website stakeholder and user.
“I believe that .sport will play a fundamental role in the progression of digital development, not just for IFs but for all industries involved in the world of sport.”
The WSIS Forum is a global platform created by the United Nations (UN) to advance SDGs. It represents the world’s largest annual gathering of the ‘ICT for development’ community and provides an opportunity for information exchange, knowledge creation and sharing of best practices.
