GAISF has launched a series of workshops to equip Members to meet the challenges of the EU’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which affects every international sports organisation and is considered the most significant and far-reaching change to data privacy rules in the last 20 years.
The first workshop, which took place in late May, focussed on preparing for the GDPR, and included a high-level introduction to the regulation, case studies and recommended best practice. Over 50 International Federations (IFs) and associations attended the workshop, which was also live-streamed and is available on YouTube for those who could not attend.
The next two sessions, which will take place on 11 and 19 June, will look more closely at the concrete measures that should be taken to fulfil the new obligations, as well as the preparation of relevant legal documents.
The GDPR relates to any organisation that stores data about individuals and it is critical that all IFs take the legally required steps. The GAISF workshops support Members in the initial activation phase by providing the necessary framework and processes required to ensure IFs are GDPR compliant.
GAISF Head of Digital Pierre Germeau led the session alongside FIBA’s PMO and Risk Senior Manager Sebastien Miazza. Following the first workshop, Germeau said:
“There has been a lot of confusion about what the GDPR is and how it affects organisations, and GAISF is working hard to reassure and inform its Members. We are now in the ‘activation’ phase, whereby each IF should be working towards compliance. These workshops are an indication that our Members are doing that, and GAISF is providing as much practical advice as possible, which can be put into place straight away.”
